Introduction: Healthcare is an ever-evolving field. Change is part of life and part of change is learning how to deal with your new environment. Doctors, nurses, social workers and managers continually educate themselves, stay abreast of current events, attend seminars, learn new technologies, pharmaceutical discoveries and expand their knowledge in their area of work. In this field, healthcare professionals must be willing to adapt and accept change. For patients, it is the responsibility of healthcare professionals to make the environment as stable as possible to ensure their well-being, however, staff should be willing to accept an unpredictable environment. Sound Shore Medical Center located in New Rochelle, New York is currently going through many changes. On May 29, 2013, Sound Shore Medical Center filed for bankruptcy and was acquired and purchased by Montefiore Medical Center. Problem: Due to several changes that occurred following the bankruptcy, nurses and other staff at Sound Shore Medical Center must now adapt to the changes made by Montefiore. After interviewing the nursing manager of the Medical Surgical department, she informed me how tense the nurses are about the new change. In the first weeks of August 2013, he stated how 1,200 employees were laid off for various reasons, such as budget cuts that needed room to hire new employees once Montefiore came into being. Lewin's Theory of Change: Kurt Lewin's theory is a 3-step model that mainly focuses on change management tactics to manage change in the workplace. (Kaminski, 2011) The three phases incorporated into Lewin's theory are the unfreezing phase, which is where finding a method is... middle of paper... change is always taking place and they play an important role. Conclusion: In every organization change plays a vital role in an environment such as a hospital. A drastic change in an environment has been shown to create a difficult and upsetting process for people to adapt to. The change in management and ownership from Sound Shore Medical Center to Montefiore Medical Center has brought many changes to everyone involved, such as doctors, nurses and the community. Lewin's theory has been shown to help alleviate the problems that arise from 3-step change. The process will take some time for staff to adapt and the higher authority will need to take on more responsibility to ensure they show excellent leadership and management to meet the needs of the staff and patients they are serving while the transition is in progress. occur.
